When interior designer and founder of Oslo Design Co. Ashley Haley decided it was time for a custom carpet stair runner makeover in her home, she came to FLOOR360. What follows below is the step-by-step process we followed to help Ashley achieve her design goals for her home – with photos illustrating every step. The process started with defining what she didn’t like about her old stair runner, making the carpet selection in our showroom, measuring and creating a template for accuracy, installing the carpeting, and appreciating the final result.
THE OLD STAIR RUNNER - Before
The old stair runner in Ashely’s home was not installed with the highest attention to detail when it was installed in the 1990’s. The carpeting on the landing and the runner do not connect, with visible carpet threads peeking out. The color and pattern of the carpeting didn’t match her interior design style either which is organic modern. Another issue was the width of the runner, there was too much room on either side, so the new custom carpet stair runner will have 6 inches visible on either side giving it a more modern look.
making the carpet selection
When Ashley was making the carpet selection in the FLOOR360 showroom for her custom carpet stair runner, she considered a number of linear patterns like plaid and herringbone while sticking to a neutral color palette. The carpet material she chose was 100% wool because it’s an organic and sustainable material that will resist wear and stains with the added benefit of being hypoallergenic.
measuring and creating a template
FLOOR360 installation specialist Jesse ensured accuracy in installation by measuring and creating a template of the staircase. The most important part of this project was measuring and cutting the carpet that goes on the middle landing so it connects on all sides without any gaps or loose threads. The cut of the new carpet will adhere to the angles of the wall giving it an elevated and polished look.
INSTALLING THE CARPETING
Before installing the carpeting at Ashley’s home, the FLOOR60 in-house fabricator cut the carpet to the template measurements and added a black border. Then it was time for Jesse to finalize the installation of the custom carpet stair runner using his signature high-attention to detail and artisan-level skills to create a work of art for Ashley’s stairs.
