Installation of the Month – Modern Traditional Stair Runner

STAIR RUNNER INSTALLATION

FLOOR360 completed a modern traditional stair runner installation with carpeting selected by interior design firm Zander’s Interiors with assistance from FLOOR360 interior designer Autumn Stankovsky. The stair runner was installed on a staircase leading to the second level, which features two landings, and on the staircase descending to the lower level. The home was built by Hart DeNoble Builders and appeared in the June 2025 Madison Area Builders Association Parade of Homes. The carpet is a 100% wool flatweave from Stanton, featuring a grey and ivory striped pattern with a matching serged border, which was selected by Zander’s Interiors and the homeowners.

“HOLLYWOOD” INSTALLATION

This is an excellent example of a Hollywood installation style stair runner otherwise known as french capped, contoured or upholstered stairs. To achieve this effect, the carpet is attached to the bottom of the stair riser, then tacked under the stair nosing, and wrapped tightly over the stair nosing and stretched over the tack strips at the back of the stair tread. It’s a painstaking process but well worth the end result!

WOOL CARPETING

The interior designers and homeowners chose wool carpeting because it will resist crushing while maintaining its shape, pattern, and color. FLOOR360’s Autumn Stankovsky observes, “100% wool carpeting is eco-friendly, biodegradable, naturally hypoallergenic, and fire-resistant.” She also says, “The color and style perfectly match and enhance the modern traditional interior design style of the home.”

IN-HOUSE CARPET FABRICATOR

FLOOR360 has a talented in-house carpet fabricator, Jim Ratkowski, who cuts the carpet according to the staircase specifications and the pattern in the carpeting. The carpet fabricator also selects a thread for the serged border and stitches a uniform-sized border by hand.

INSTALLATION CRAFTSMANSHIP

The installation craftsmanship is courtesy of Jesse Schneider, a talented FLOOR360 carpet installer who travels all over Wisconsin to apply his considerable skills to commercial and residential projects. Installing a wool carpet runner on a staircase with landings and curves is a highly unique and specialized skill that not every flooring installer possesses. Jesse has years of experience and a high attention to detail that results in a stair runner that will last for generations.
